Chapter 12 Journal

My reaction to the end of the novel was that I didn't expect it to end how it did. I thought it would have and ending to where they went back home and how they dealt with the real life after they got rescued from the island. I also thought the ending would've been better. The ending that Golding gave was for me too simple and I felt it needed more detail. I think that Ralph cried at the end of the novel because as is said " 'Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of a man's heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy' "(Golding 202). Basically he cried for what they all have became and what they had caused from being on this island. I also think that he was relieved fro being attack by Jack and Roger; due to the officer coming and finding them. The character I most despise would probably be Jack. I despise him the most because he was the leader of the savages and he set the example for them. Under his "rule" he and the savages caused death. I feel if Jack never wanted the urge to lead and be different then I feel the deaths the savage manner wouldn't cause as much damage as it did. I would only recommend this book to someone who really would pay attention to detail such as the symbolism. I know that most people out there really wouldn't do so, so I really wouldn't recommend this to any regular person.

Chapter 11 Questions

1. Ralph's group has decided to go to Jack's tribe and try to get Piggy's glasses back and to tell them that they should maintain a signal fire for the hopes of being rescued.

2. The twins are seeing Ralph for the first time before going to Castle Rock in the ways of that they are seeing Ralph in a different manner in what they are used to. Ralph usually can maintain his order but in this section Ralph kind of loses his mind and becomes angry.

3. The whole attempt of the boys going to the savages and trying to get Piggy's glasses and maintain the signal fire is bound to fail because Jack doesn't really care if they gets rescued and all Jack cares about he and his tribe surviving. Jack will do and think of anything to get make sure that they survive in any way.

4. I think that roger pushes the rock off the roof because he wants to add to the frenzy that is going on and also he would want to help Jack and the savages in the fight that is going on.

5. The destruction of the conch is symbolically significant because it means the end of the civilization that the boys tried to build and maintain at the beginning of the book. The laws and sense of government is now gone.

6. The boys want a chief because it takes the place of the adult figure they need. It also gives them the security that someone is their leader and can look after their well being.

7.
  • Did you know that what you killed wasn't the beast but it was actually Simon trying to tell you that the "beast" was just a dead carcass?
  • If you had a choice to be rescued tomorrow would you go back home or continue to stay at the Island?
8. The Island has turned from this adventure filled wonderland that we all would have fun in to a place of complete disgust and shame. The island now seems like a never escaping pit of complete betrayal a loss of humanity. I feel at this rate we won't get rescued and we will eat ourselves alive before the island has a chance to. The island for me now is a place where I wouldn't want to be. If I knew that it would cause this to all of us I would like to take back the idea of when I thought this was a place of fun and freedom.
The boys now are totally not the people who I met and knew the first day we came into the island. It seems that this island brought out the worst in everybody. Ralph is now losing his mind and getting fed up with everyone. Jack is now a complete monster. He totally changed and I don't know who he is anymore. And everyone else doesn't know what to do.  they all need some sense of leadership, but we aren't getting anything. We need help before chaos arrives and destroys us all.

Chapter 10 Common Core Questions

1. Ralph kept feeling guilty about what happened last night to Simon and he kept saying that what happened to Simon was murder and what (he)/they did was totally wrong and not fair; " ' That was murder. I wasn't scared,' said Ralph slowly, 'I was-- I don't know what I was' " (Golding 156). Piggy on the other hand is trying to convince Ralph that they whole this was just an accident and for Ralph not to feel so guilty about it. Piggy tells Ralph " 'We was scared! Anything might have happened. It wasn't- what you said' " (Golding 156). Also Piggy adds, " ' It was an accident', said Piggy suddenly, ' that's what it was. An accident' ", (Golding 157).  SamnEric really didn't say much about what had happened to Simon but they did acknowledge that the "dance" was good and that they had left early because they where tired; " 'Yes. We were very tired,' repeated Sam, 'so we left early' ", (Golding 158).

2.  The difference between the feelings Ralph and Jack have towards what happened to Simon that night was that Ralph felt guilt and sorrow for what everyone did and how he didn't do nothing to stop it. Ralph knows what happened what wrong and says it was murder. " 'That was murder' ', (Golding 156). While Ralph on the other hand claims it was a beast and it wasn't Simon. " ' -and then, the might try to come in. You remember how he crawled-' 'He came - disguised. He may come again even though we gave him the head of our kill to eat. So watch; and be careful' ", (Golding 160).

3. The conclusions I can make about Jack based on his order to beat Wilfred is that he can't control his anger. When Roger asked Robert about why Wilfred was tied he just said " 'I don't know. He didn't say. He got angry and made us tie Wilfred up.' ", (Golding 159). It seems that Jack just acts right at the moment and doesn't think about anyone else's worries but his own.

4.
Piggy: "They're Coming!"
Ralph: "Who is it/"
Eric: "It's the savages."
Ralph: " Do anything u can to keep everything in place"
Eric: "Watch Put Here they come!!"

Editorial Questions

Questions

1. The problem that Betsy McCaughey identifies is that the CDC want to make hospital's ebola ready so they can treat the ebola infected patients.
2.  The solution that she offers is instead of trying to make hospitals Ebola ready and risk the chance of others getting infected, we should just use the bio-containment hospitals and expand those instead.
3. Sean Kaufman views the CDC's guideline for protective gear in treating the Ebola patients is that it isn't the way to go, and if the CDC did follow through on it he would consider it dead wrong and irresponsible.
4.The point that Rep. Michael Burgees made on the CDC head Thomas Frieden was that the doctors and nurses should be fully protected from head to toe and not in the certain areas where we can get infected. We can get infected from anywhere and anyplace.
5. a) Yes I do agree with this recomendation because if only a few people are infected, the reality is it's better if they are rather than a mass of people getting it and then potentially spreading it to the entire population thus maybe casuing something that could've been prevented. It might sound harsh but, the people already infected aren't going to last, rather than harm others, like nurses and doctors, and maybe other people, its better for the hospitals to stay out of it and let the "big dogs", who are meant to actually handle stuff like this, to do their job and leave the general public out of it.
b) N/A

Summary Assingment

In the Huffington Post article “Obama Says Rape Is ‘Not Okay- And It Has To Stop’ In Grammys Message”, talks about how sexual violence is spreading and that it needs to stop starting with us. The tone established in this article was objective. It gave factual information that is happening in out country and ideas on how to help stop the sexual violence that occurs. The message conveyed in this article clearly states that rape and domestic violence is a big problem that’s affecting the whole United States. Last night on the Grammy’s, Obama asked viewers and artists to help stop it. He mentioned that if music and art can help change the culture, why the word of ending sexual violence can’t help create a culture where it isn’t tolerated. Obama then states that if the word is then spread by our entertainers, then the word will be continued on and then hopefully stopped. This whole message was stemmed on what is happening on college campuses and it had to be brought to the attention of our people. Overall the message is to in hopes bring attention to viewers that sexual violence isn’t okay and help give hope to all young people so they “ can go as far as their talents and their dreams will take them”.

Should Students be Able to Grade Their Teachers?

I honestly do think that students should be able to grade their teachers that they have for their classes. Usually students really don’t have the power to give their teacher a “grade” and tell them what they should work on to help improve their teaching skills. If students were able to,  I would be sure that it would help the teachers improve not just on their teaching skills, but on also  understanding the very different types of ways their students learn.
I think if students had the option to do so they would be honest and I think it would help the schools understand that some teachers aren’t fit to be teaching. College students are able to evaluate a.k.a “grade” their professors and express what the professors are doing right and what they are doing wrong. This evaluation is mostly for the teachers to know what aspect of their teaching is good for the students and also what isn’t good for them.
I know for a fact that students have had that one teacher in their lives that they wish they could help correct and tell them that what they are doing for the class isn’t helping, I know I have. Sometimes teachers themselves do give the students an opportunity to do so, but most really don’t. If teachers did give that opportunity or if they were more open with their students then it would be easier to connect to how they learn.
I just find that some teachers could care less about teaching their students the required material and just teach whatever. I know that teachers have a life outside of school, but they signed up to be a teacher not just a supervisor of the classroom. I’ve had my fair share of these types of teachers and I just feel they either need a wake up call or don’t even need to be teachers.
Teachers are educated adults who should be able to help you academically, not people who are confusing their students or not even caring about them. I just think that a grading system for teachers would really show what their students think about how the teachers run their classroom and their teaching as a whole. It’s just a polite way of just expressing what students’ feel what their teachers are doing well in and what they might need to improve.
I just feel like this should be a topic to talk about because middle school and high school students should be able to express their thoughts about their teachers and just give them a “grade” about their teaching. I feel it would benefit both the students and the teachers in many ways as making the learning environment better and both teachers and students understanding each other better.

Joy Luck Club

In the novel Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, it’s clear to see that throughout the story that the daughters and mothers have different views on everyday things and love. Their generations have a big thing to do with how they all think differently and how they handle the situation. The time difference and also where they grew up is a big factor that contributes to the different perspectives they have.
The generations differ in their ideas on life, love and family because each mother experienced something different and something that their daughters wouldn’t really go through. Most of the mothers just see things as black and white and really think that the judgment of the town is what makes the name for them. They all have that strong willed personality where they won’t change for no one.

For example, Suyuan Woo doesn’t really like to focus on her hardships and the past, now that she’s dead her daughter Jing-mei (June) Woo really has to fix what was broken and make things right again. I think that Suyuan was like this because of the life she lived. She had to not worry about herself and worry about her two daughters she had in China and think about the life she had to leave for them. With her leaving her daughters and other decisions she made, she doesn’t like to look back on them. June is now taking her mothers place and making things right and doing the opposite of her mother by focusing on her past and fixing it.

Each difference manifests itself by showing how the different generations react to what the situation brings them. For example, Waverly Jong is the star of the family and is the one that gives the family their name. Her mother pushes her and pushes her to make sure the family name is high up. In America having a bug family name and winning chess matches really isn’t such a big deal. This differs from Lindo Jong’s perspective because in her times family names and high ranking is always important.

For marriage and divorce Lena and Ying-ying see things way differently. Lena doesn’t really want to help her marriage and just wants to let it go. Ying-ying feels that a marriage should last forever and if there are problems then Lena should fix it. They both have different views because in Chinese culture there is no such thing as divorce, but in American culture there is. Ying-ying’s generation sees it as an everlasting promise while Lena’s generation sees it as a problem that can either fall apart or magically be mended.
